In 2015, 841 200 people obtained citizenship of an EU-28 Member State, a decrease of 5 % compared with 2014, according to Eurostat.
- About 86 % of those who acquired citizenship of an EU-28 Member State in 2015 were previously citizens of a non-EU country.
- The top five citizenship-granting countries accounted for 75 % of new citizenships granted in the EU in 2015: Italy (178 000 or 21 %), followed by the United Kingdom (118 000 or 14 %), Spain(114 400 or 14 %), France(113 600 or 14 %) and Germany (110 100 or 13 %).
- Acquisitions of citizenship by women outnumbered acquisitions by men in all but nine of Member States (Belgium, Bulgaria, Ireland, Greece, Italy, Hungary, Malta, Romania and Slovenia).
- The leading third country nationalities acquiring citizenship are: Morocco, Albania, Turkey, India, Romania, Pakistan.
- The median age of persons acquiring citizenship in the whole of the EU was 32
