A technologically-advanced and highly secure new Maltese passport with cutting edge security features to prevent counterfeiting will be issued by the end of 2019, according to Identity malta.
The new passport will still have biometric chip will incorporate the following security features
- Printed on a highly sensitive, but secure paper, that will include hidden security features and encrypted techniques using UV and visible fibres, high quality cylinder mould watermarks and security thread.
- The inner pages of the new passport will depict imagery of renowned Maltese landmarks as well as elements of Malta’s cultural heritage, printed in secure ink.

“The Maltese people are very keen on travelling and are fond of culture and heritage too; three elements that will be captured in the new Maltese passport, which will gradually make its way later this year,” said Parliamentary Secretary for Reforms,
The gradual introduction of the new passport, which will take place over a span of years, will start towards the end of 2019. The new travel document will be issued on application for a new passport or upon renewal.
Existing passports in circulation will remain valid and fit for travel until their expiry date. Upon renewal, the new passport will be issued for no additional charge.
Identity Malta, the agency which issues Malta’s passports, also reiterated its commitment towards making its services more accessible.
