The Institute of Economics and Peace, publishes Global Peace Index, which ranks most peaceful countries in the world. According to the 2017 report, Iceland is the most peaceful country, No.1, followed by New Zealand in No.2 and Portugal is ranked No.3 in the world for peace.
According to the report, Portugal moved to third position, its highest ranking since the inception of the index, a notable improvement given that it was ranked 16th less than ve years ago. Portugal has improved on 12 of the 23 GPI indicators, most notably on weapons imports and violent demonstrations.
The 2017 GPI provides a comprehensive analysis on the state of peace. It shows that amidst continuing social and political turmoil, the world continues to spend enormous resources on creating and containing violence but very little on peace.
- Iceland remains the most peaceful country in the world, a position it has held since 2008. It is joined at the top of the index by New Zealand, Portugal, Austria, and Denmark, all of which were ranked highly in the 2016 GPI.
- Syria remains the least peaceful country in the world, followed by Afghanistan, Iraq, South Sudan, and Yemen.
