In 2015, 841Â 200 people obtained citizenship of an EU-28 Member State, a decrease of 5Â % compared with 2014, according to Eurostat.
- About 86Â % of those who acquired citizenship of an EU-28 Member State in 2015 were previously citizens of a non-EU country.
- The top five citizenship-granting countries accounted for 75Â % of new citizenships granted in the EU in 2015: Italy (178Â 000 or 21Â %), followed by the United Kingdom (118Â 000 or 14Â %), Spain(114Â 400 or 14Â %), France(113 Â 600 or 14Â %) and Germany (110Â 100 or 13Â %).
- Acquisitions of citizenship by women outnumbered acquisitions by men in all but nine of Member States (Belgium, Bulgaria, Ireland, Greece, Italy, Hungary, Malta, Romania and Slovenia).
- The leading third country nationalities acquiring citizenship are:Â Â Morocco, Albania, Turkey, India, Romania, Pakistan.
