Malta donates €5 million to Puttinu Cares foundation

The Prime Minister of Malta, Dr. Joseph Muscat Prime Minister announced that the government is donating €5 million from the Economic and Social Development Fund of the Citizenship by investment program to the Puttinu Cares Foundation.

The Puttinu Cares Cancer Support Group was set up in 2002 and began from an idea and a desire to offer a holistic approach of care for families with children suffering from cancer.  Dr. Victor Calvagna and Mr. Rennie Zerafa were the founders of this group.

On an average, 30 Maltese young patients have to travel to the UK for diagnoses or treatment each month, which sums up to a figure of an annual figure of 360 people.  Puttinu Cares currently spends around € 500,000 to help such families in travelling and subsistence costs.

According to TVM, The President of Puttinu Cares Victor Calvagna told TVM that this donation will make it possible for the organisation to secure an apartment block in Central London.

He said the generous €5 million donation will enable Puttinu’s dream to come true.

The Prime Minister said he has great empathy for people in such a situation and their need for medical treatment in England because 35 years ago his own father had to travel there for medical treatment.
