First ever citizenship in Space

Ever heard of citizenship in space? You can become a citizen of Asgardia is the first-ever space nation — a global humanitarian project for everyone on the planet.

Asgarida is a ‘global humanitarian project’ which hopes to one day set up human colonies on the Moon. It was founded in October 2016 and already has about 2,00,000 citizens, a constitution and an elected parliament, Economic times reported. In Norse religion, Asgard is one of the Nine Worlds and home to the Æsir tribe of gods.

Announced on 12 October 2016, the ultimate aim of the project is to create a new nation that allows access to outer space free of the control of existing nations.

Asgardia was created with three top goals in mind: to ensure the peaceful use of space, to protect the Earth from space hazards, and to create a demilitarized and free scientific base of knowledge in space. Asgardia also has a long-term objective of setting up habitable platforms in space and building settlements on the Moon including Arks.

Asgardia, also known as the Space Kingdom of Asgardia, is a group of people who have launched a satellite into Earth orbit.  Asgardia intends to launch a series of satellites into Earth orbit. Its first satellite was successfully launched by Orbital ATK on 12 November 2017 as part of an International Space Station resupply mission The Cygnus spacecraft that carried Asgardia-1 into space released Asgardia-1 and two other satellites on 6 December 2017. The Space Kingdom of Asgardia has claimed that it is now “the first nation to have all of its territory in space.”

The Asgardians have adopted a constitution and they intend to access outer space free of the control of existing nations.

Asgardia will be a fully fledged, independent nation inhabited on a low Earth orbit. It began with a satellite, Asgardia-1, that was launched in 2017, to be followed by an orbital satellite constellation launch in 2019-2020, and later by other satellite constellations and Space Arks, as well as by settlements on the Moon. Arks are man-made platforms that the citizens of Asgardia will be able to inhabit in the future as a part of Asgardia’s territory in space.
