Luxembourg passports in great demand after time for citizenship reduced to 5 years

Luxembourg is one of the smallest and richest countries in the world in terms of per capita income. The country has 600K population and mostly almost half of the population is made up of foreigners.

 

In April 2017, Luxembourg reduced the naturalization time for citizenship from seven years to five years. After that the demand for luxembourg passport increased by 30%

 

 

A total of 13,185 people acquired Luxembourg passports in 2018, up from 10,095 the previous year 2017 compared  just 2,796 in 2016 according to the figures provided Justice Minister

French lead the foreigners in acquiring luxembourg passports followed by Belgians and Portuguese. Despite Brexit problems, Britons come in on small numbers

Luxembourg also runs a golden visa scheme offering residence path to foreign investors who invest 500,000 euros in business creating jobs or government securities. Despite Luxembourg is an exciting country for UHNW the scheme has failed attract any interest.

 

The Luxembourgish passport is ranked fifth powerful passport in the world with visa free access to 185 countries in Henley rankings.

 

According to luxembourg nationality law,  Naturalisation is open to all adults, provided that:

 

  • they have legally resided in Luxembourg for at least 5 years. The final year of residence immediately preceding the naturalisation application must have been uninterrupted;
  • they have knowledge of the Luxembourgish language, as evidenced by a Luxembourgish language test pass certificate;
  • they have taken the “Vivre ensemble au Grand-Duché de Luxembourg” course or passed the test covering the topics taught in this course.
  •  Applicant has a condition of good repute.
  • No criminal background and citizenship reduced for criminal sentence abroad for 12 months or more.
